QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Bobbi Ann Brady last week in support of mental health week and ahead of Flora’s Walk, brought forward a perinatal mental health motion proposing the government require that perinatal practitioners provide education to spouses, partners and family members in the close circle of those with a newborn.

“Signs and symptoms of post-partum depression and perinatal mental health are often overlooked in our health system and by extension, family members, spouses, and partners of a significant percentage of soon-to-be or new moms,” Brady said. “Educating people close to post-partum women would go a long way to improved mental health and even saving lives. I hope the Ford government takes my motion to heart and implements it.”

Brady’s motion read as follows:

That, in the opinion of the House, the government should require all perinatal practitioners to provide education to spouses, partners, and families to identify the signs and symptoms of perinatal mental health.

MPP Brady continued that keeping new parents at their very best mentally is paramount to the well-being of the child.
