QUEEN’S PARK: On the first day of National Nursing Week, Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady wants to join the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) to celebrate nurses and the critical role they play in the healthcare system. National Nursing Week (May 11-17) is a yearly celebration recognizing the important contributions of nurses to people’s health and wellbeing. The RNAO has adopted as their theme Empowered Nurses Save Lives

“The importance of nurses in our healthcare system cannot be overstated,” said Brady. “I am a champion of nursing and have urged more government support and respect for nurses since my election in 2022.  I am proud to have a daughter who is a Registered Nurse who reports back to me on a regular basis, and I know full well the challenges our frontline nurses face on a daily basis.”

Brady reiterates the message she has been speaking since 2022 that nurses are often overworked and burnt out. Some excellent nurses have retired early due to stress while others were part of a large cohort of people reaching retirement age. Brady has urged the Minister of Health to get every qualified healthcare professional on the job at a time when the system needs all hands on deck, and to compensate fairly.

But this week, Brady wants to celebrate nursing and nurses and reminds that the RNAO, along with stakeholders, has organized an interesting array of free events offering something for every nurse and nursing student. As the RNAO put it: “These events acknowledge the expertise, leadership and impact of registered nurses (RN) and nurse practitioners (NP) across all sectors of health care. Nurses also raise awareness about the vital role they play among members of the public, policymakers and government.”  Brady suggests checking out the RNAO website for more event details: https://rnao.ca/events/nursing-week
