QUEEN’S PARK: Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady on May 5th tabled a motion in the Ontario Legislature to encourage the Ontario Government to amend the Municipal Act, 2001, and eliminate the appointment of Integrity Commissioners. The motion is now recorded as Motion 73.

The wording of her motion was as follows: That in the opinion of this House, the Government of Ontario should remove costly duplication within municipalities by amending the Municipal Act, 2001 to eliminate the appointment of Integrity Commissioners.

“I’ve witnessed firsthand across our municipal governments, and I’ve been contacted by municipal offices from across Ontario that Integrity Commissioners—who are supposed to uphold fairness—vary widely in how they conduct investigations, how they write their reports, and how they recommend penalties.

“That’s not justice. That’s unpredictability. And it comes at a cost. Taxpayers are funding a system that too often lacks consistency and clear standards—when in many cases, these responsibilities could be handled by experienced senior municipal administration like a CAO, clerk or GM.”                                                                                                         -30-
