Brady wishes Todd Smith well but worries about education
QUEEN’S PARK – Upon hearing of Education Minister Todd Smith’s sudden resignation today, MPP Bobbi Ann Brady wished Mr. Smith well but worries about the state of Ontario’s education system.
“I want to wish Todd Smith all the best as he leaves public life,” Brady said. “But I worry about the state of our education system as we start a new school year. Minister Smith opted out after only two months…What did he see?”
It’s been just over two months since the June 6 cabinet shuffle when Minister Stephen Lecce was swapped out as Education Minister with Minister Smith to take the lead of the Energy and Electrification portfolio. Brady acknowledges that perhaps Mr. Smith got an interesting role that lured him to the private sector, but based on what she has been hearing from parents, educators and students, she has concerns that he may have seen challenges that appeared extremely daunting.
“Parents, educators, and students have been telling me for years that things are not well in our schools,” Brady said. “Despite record funding, the education system is broken. I’m concerned it was so broken that Mr. Smith saw the truth and was tempted away.”
Brady will be closely following this development and hopes the government puts students, parents, and educators first.
“This is one of the most important government portfolios,” said Brady. “We’ve just changed horses and now we’re changing horses again three weeks before school starts.”
