QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Bobbi Ann Brady is pouring over pages of Fall Economic Statement and feels at first glance, it’s another missed opportunity for this government.
“I was hard pressed to find anything in the Fall Economic Statement (FES) that matters to Ontario Families, let alone families in Haldimand-Norfolk,” Brady said. “Of the thousands of folks who have contacted me since my election in 2022, none of their ongoing concerns were addressed by this FES. In short, once again the government missed the mark.”
Brady clarified that she has been hearing many concerns and complaints about skyrocketing rents—up 33% across Ontario; medical access—16,986 in Haldimand-Norfolk currently without a doctor, 2.5 million without a doctor in Ontario; autism waitlists—73,000 autistic children on the waiting list across the province; and, food insecurity—1 in 6 homes in Haldimand-Norfolk are food insecure thus ever-increasing foodbank use.
Brady also questioned specific points in the Building Ontario for You: 2024 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review upon which the FES is predicated.
“It says in black and white, “Creating better jobs with bigger paycheques” and “Building highways, transit and other infrastructure,”” Brady stated. “Where are the jobs and bigger paycheques? I’m hearing about employment struggles from many constituents, and then they threaten to cost us more jobs with an MZO that can drop a city of 40,000 on the Nanticoke industrial lands. And where is the new infrastructure? Caledonia’s Argyle Street Bridge has needed reconstruction for over 20 years and Haldibrook Road and Highway 6 are in dire need of traffic lights.”
Brady concluded by stating that the $200 rebate coming in the new year is the government giving us a fraction of our hard-earned money back as an election ploy. Over the coming months, she hopes the government will better listen to what truly matters to Ontarians and adjust policy accordingly.
