Queen’s Park—Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady says it’s long past due to create a permanent reminder of the sacrifices Canadian military veterans and soldiers have made and continue to make for society’s gift of freedom.

Yesterday, Brady tabled a motion in the Ontario Legislature that reads:

That, in the opinion of this House, the Government of Ontario should direct municipalities to set aside, and secure in perpetuity, a painted crosswalk in remembrance of Canadian military veterans and soldiers, to honour their service and sacrifice and to show deep appreciation for the priceless gift of freedom.

“I feel the further away we move from the world wars and continue through this current era of the “long peace,” we are more likely to lose sight of the courageous and determined efforts to secure peace, freedom and liberty,” Brady said. “The sacrifices by Canadian men and women were immense; therefore, the least we can do is ensure every community in Ontario remembers, every single day.”

The local MPP said if the government does not act upon her motion, she plans to introduce legislation to the same effect.

Over the coming months Brady will be working with Legions, Army, Navy and Air Force chapters and other veterans’ associations to ensure a piece of legislation brought forward is respectful and sensitive to the memory of those who have served, serve and made the ultimate sacrifice.
